The events in Port Arthur are considered the most massacre in the history of Australia and one of the most massacres in the world, and in relation to those killed in the total number of settlements (about 200 people) - a record.

Martin Bryant , a 28-year-old native of Newtown , walked into a cafe in the evening, among which there were many tourists, took out an AR-15 assault rifle with an optical sight from a large bag and opened aimed fire at visitors to the cafe. Then he destroyed the AR-15 assault rifle with the help of a blank cartridge full of gunpowder and began to use the FN FAL rifle . Towards the end of the denouement, Bryant tried to set fire to the house ^[3] , destroying the evidence, but his clothes lit up on him, after which he was detained .

At the trial, Martin Bryant ( IQ 66, people with such an IQ are classified as mentally retarded ) declared his innocence, but in November 1996 he received 35 life sentences (one for each victim) and, according to various sources, an additional 700 to 1000 years for other crimes. ^[four]
