On January 7, 1989, Akihito, 55 (born December 23, 1933 ), the eldest son of the deceased Emperor Hirohito, became the 125th emperor of Japan . According to the traditional Japanese chronology, a new era has begun, officially named Heisei ("Peace").
The beginning of the Heisei era was marked by the peak of the power of the Japanese economy in 1989, which was replaced by a financial crisis and the stagnation that followed it, exacerbated by the 2008 global crisis .
In August 2016, Emperor Akihito in his television appeal to the Japanese people expressed his concern that in his future his advanced age would not allow him to reign on the throne. In June 2017, the Japanese Parliament passed a law allowing the throne to be transferred to the emperor’s son, Crown Prince Naruhito [2] . According to this law, on April 30, 2019, the emperor abdicated: the Heisei era is over [3] .
A new era - the Rave era ( 令 和 和 ) [4] began on May 1, 2019 along with the accession to the throne of Naruhito.
