Pomacenter [1] , or reef fish ( lat. Pomacentridae ) , is a family of brightly colored tropical marine fish from the order of perciformes (Perciformes). There are 387 species combined in 29 genera and 4 subfamilies. Distributed mainly in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, as well as in the tropical waters of the Atlantic .

They are characterized by ctenoid scales , weak teeth and only one row of branchial leaves on the fourth branchial arch (the back row is underdeveloped). They feed on small animals and especially small polyps of coral reefs , among which the majority of fish live.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the family belonged to the pharyngeal (Pharyngognathi) bony fish. In the modern classification, the pomocenter ones are part of the order of perched fish (Perciformes).
