Morville (Priority)

Morville ( Eng. Morville ) is a medieval Benedictine Priory in England, in the county of Shropshire . The exact location of the priori buildings that have not been preserved to this day is unknown. With minor changes, only his church dedicated to St. Gregory reached us. According to local tradition, Morville Hall , a mansion of the 16th century , rebuilt in the 18th century , was built on the site of the priority. However, it could be located on the other side of the church [1] (inaccessible link) .

History

In the Anglo-Saxon period , a community of eight canons existed at the church in Morville. Between 1083 and 1086, Roger, Earl of Shrewsbury , bestowed this church on Shrewsbury Abbey . The new parish church, built in 1118, came under the authority of the abbey around 1138, with the consent of the bishop of Hereford . In administrative and financial terms, Priory was completely subordinate to Shrewsbury Abbey ; all his income was considered the property of the abbey. In turn, several chapels were subordinated to prioritization. Probably the number of monks never exceeded 2 or 3 people; in 1518 and 1521, and, apparently, in 1372, the prior lived in the monastery alone [2] . Prior names are mentioned occasionally in the sources; as a rule, in connection with certain excesses. So, Prior John Wallensis (Wales) in 1253 was accused of receiving part of a carcass of a deer illegally shot in the royal forest [3] (inaccessible link) . The last prior, the former abbot of Shrewsbury, Richard Marshall (who renounced the abbey in 1529), Morville, after the liquidation of his monastery status in 1540, was granted by the king for life. Priori's income at this time was approximately £ 30; however, it itself lay in ruins, and the prior (who died in 1558), apparently, lived in a different place, since by 1546 this place was in the hands of another (secular) owner [4] .
