The poem begins with a prayer to God; then follows the prologue in prose, in which the author seeks to clarify the moral direction of his poems. The most poems, very diverse in content, but skillfully connected with one another, consist of a series of stories that embody features from the life of the author himself (mainly love affairs) and intertwined with allegories, apologists, fables , etc. , which , however, serve only as a cover for the real facts. One of the main characters of the poems is the attorney and mediator in all the love affairs of the author, named Urraka; this type is very often found later in Spanish dramas.

Ruiz's poetry is natural and lively; it is dominated by a satirical spirit with an admixture of good-natured humor; the author points out the corruption of the Roman court, the harmful effects of money. In some places, Ruiz’s poetry is full of greatness and tenderness, for example. in the poem "On Death"; sometimes his poems are imbued with the spirit of truly Catholic piety, for example. in the hymns of the Virgin . The narrative parts of the poems are laid out in 14 complex Alexandrian stanzas, and the rest in no less than 18 different sizes; thus, the work of Ruiz gives a real collection of samples of ancient Spanish rhythm.

Ruiz's “Poesías” were first published by Sánchez, in “Colección de poesías castellanas anteriores al siglo XV” (vol. 4, Madrid , 1790 ; incomplete edition), then reprinted by Ochoa (Par., 1842 ) and in “Biblioteca de autores españoles ”(vol. 57, Madrid, 1864 ).
