Janis Janovic Klovan ( April 9, 1935 , Saldus - October 5, 2010 ) - Latvian , formerly Soviet chess player , international master ( 1976 ), grandmaster ( 1997 ), grand master of the ICChF ( 2001 ). Economist. Multiple champion of the Latvian SSR and USSR Armed Forces. He participated in 4 USSR championships ( 1963 - 1975 ; the best result: 1968 - 7–11 place) and the Spartakiad of the peoples of the USSR (as a part of the team of the Latvian SSR). European champion in correspondence in the team event ( 1978 - 1982 and 1983 - 1988 ). Winner of the international tournament in Leningrad ( 1974 , championship of the Sports Club of friendly armies). The best results in other international competitions ( list for 1987 ): Primorsko (1976) - 1st – 4th; Jurmala (1978) - 8-10th; Polyanitsa-Zdroj ( 1980 ) and Jurmala (1983) - 5-8 places. Member of two chess Olympiads in the national team of Latvia (1992, 2000). 3-time world champion among veterans (seniors; 1997, 1999, 2001).
