Maria Pekshena ( Latvian. Pēkšēna Marija , October 10, 1845 - December 8, 1903 ) - the first Latvian female playwright.

Biography
Born in a wealthy peasant family. She graduated from the city school in Wolmar . She worked as a governess in the Nuku estate since 1869 in Vecat , where the play “Gertrude” ( Latvian “Ģertrūde” ) was written about the conflict between society and a woman of modern times. She won the first prize in a competition organized by the Latvian society, but for censorship reasons the play was staged only in 1877 .
The second play, “One Story” ( Latvian “Vienu stāstu” ), appeared on the stage of the Latvian Theater in the same year, had a similar plot.
In the early 1880s, she moved to Riga , to her brother Jekab Pekshen, who was engaged in law practice. A cousin, Konstantin Pekshen , later became an outstanding architect.
In Riga, the plays Travel companions ( Latvian. Ceļa biedri ) and Time of Flowers ( Latvian. Laiku ziedi ) were written , which had difficulties with censorship. Unpublished plays and a collection of poems “In the sun and in the shade” ( Latvian “Saulgoži un pakrēšļi” ) are kept in the manuscript department of the Latvian Academic Library.
Died in Riga, buried in the Big Cemetery [1] . In 1990, the sculptor A. Varpa installed a memorial stone in Ramatas parish, Valmiera district. [2]
