Darwin operates a passenger terminal for domestic and international transport with numerous shopping areas, restaurants and cafes, as well as a terminal for freight traffic.
The airport serves more than 56 thousand flights a year and according to statistics for 2007 it served a little less than two million passengers.
History
In 1919, with the opening of the air communication between England and Australia in the suburbs of Darwin, the so-called Australian terminal was built, which worked as two separate airports for civil and military aviation [3] . In 1945, the Australian Ministry of Aviation authorized the use of a Darwinian air force base for civil aviation, with the result that the small civilian airport in the suburbs was closed and the military base became the co-location airport for military and commercial aircraft [3] .
From 1950 to 1974, Darwin Airport was the main domestic and international transit hub of the Northern Territory , used by major airlines such as Qantas Airways . In 1974, cyclone Tracy destroyed more than 70% of the city and demolished almost the entire airport complex, which was restored within a few years. In December 1991, a new passenger terminal was put into operation with four teletraps for boarding gates (gates).
Present
Darwin International Airport has only one passenger terminal for domestic and international flights. Regular routes connect the airport with the cities of the Northern Territory of the country, all major Australian cities (with the exception of Canberra , as well as with the airports of Cairns , Broome , Singapore , Dili ( East Timor ) and Bali . Darwin Airport is one of the emergency sites for the space shuttle Space Shuttle [4] .

Darwin is widely used by general aviation and military aircraft.
Darwin Airport irregularly received supersonic Concordes prior to their decommissioning, as it was one of the few airports in the country to have a suitable runway length.
Development Plans
According to representatives of the Australian low-cost airline Jetstar Airways, the company plans to use Darwin International Airport as one of its hubs on routes to Asia . Since the airport is sufficiently close to the countries of Southeast Asia , the airline intends to build its Asian route network as a transit between Asia and large cities of southern Australia using Airbus A320 series aircraft , the duration of which will be between four and six hours. [6] . The Philippines Nina Aquino International Airport and Kota Kinabalu International Airport in Malaysia are scheduled to be included in the list of new flights through Darwin Airport .
The new airline discounter, Tiger Airways, also expressed its intention to use Darwin International Airport as its additional hub [7] , but in October 2008, due to a sharp decline in passenger traffic, the company stopped flights from Singapore to Darwin and the future strategic partnership with the airport now time is questionable.
