Telopea beautiful ( lat. Telopea speciosissima ) is a type of shrubs from the Protean family, grows in southeastern Australia in the state of New South Wales , the emblem of which is. Known for its large dark red buds composed of hundreds of individual flowers .

Botanical description

Shrub up to 3-4 meters tall with one or more stems .
Leaves are alternate, dark green, leathery, with a toothed edge, 13-25 cm long.
Inflorescences are dark red, with a diameter of 7-10 cm, surrounded by bracts 5-7 cm long.
Fruits are large, brown, open along one side, releasing winged seeds .
Dissemination and ecology
The species is found on the Central Coast , South Coast of New South Wales .
It grows on sandy soils in forests with an open top canopy.
Culture and Art
Telope beautiful was declared the official flower emblem of New South Wales October 24, 1962.
