Biography
He graduated in 1844 from the 1st Moscow Grammar School [4] . He studied at Moscow University , but did not graduate.
Collaborated in the magazine " Moskvityanin " [5] . He came close to his "young editorial staff" ( A. A. Grigoriev , A. N. Ostrovsky ).
In 1853, he went to the theater of war in Sevastopol as a correspondent and until the end of the siege he was at the headquarters of the commander in chief as a translator [5] . Participated in the battle of the Black River. The literary fruit of his participation in the campaign was his published Notes on the Siege of Sevastopol (in 2 volumes - Moscow, 1858) and Sevastopol Album with 37 drawings. At the end of the war he went to the Caucasus, where he was present at the capture of Shamil on August 25, 1859.
He was a correspondent for the magazine " Russian Herald " in Italy, covering the campaigns of Giuseppe Garibaldi . In the years 1860-1862 he wandered through Syria, Palestine and Egypt. During the Polish uprising, he went to Warsaw as a correspondent for St. Petersburg News .
Since 1863 he lived in Warsaw . From 1868 he taught Russian language and literature at the Warsaw Main School and the University of Warsaw that replaced it. He was the editor of the newspaper "Warsaw Diary" (1874-1877) [5] .
“Notes on Polish conspiracies and uprisings”, published in separate essays in the Russian Archive (1870–1873) and Russian Antiquity (1879) with additions and without censorship, were published in Poznan (4 vols., 1884–1885) and were banned in Russia.
He translated poems and the epic poem “ Pan Tadeusz ” by Adam Mickiewicz , works of Bulgarian, Serbian, Slovak, Ukrainian ( Taras Shevchenko and others), Slovenian, Czech poets. In the collection “Songs of Different Nations” (Moscow, 1854) he published folk songs of 26 peoples in the original and translation into Russian, including 12 Lithuanian songs from the collection of Ludwikas Reza “Dainos” (1843). Translated the hoaxes of Vaclav Hanks (considering them genuine) - Kraledvorsky and Zelenogorsk manuscripts.
In 1921, his translations of Lithuanian songs came out as a separate edition in Vilna .
Already in adulthood, Berg married in Warsaw the daughter of an engineer, ballerina Rosa Karlovna Kalinowska; they had two sons - Nikolai (1879-1901) and Vasily (1882-1952).
