Geography
Moa is a large island located in the western part of the Torres Strait group of islands, about halfway between Papua New Guinea and Australia. The nearest island, Badu , is separated from it by a three-kilometer strait. Moa covers 171.7 km² (the second largest island in the Torres Strait). The coastline is 52.6 km long. The highest point reaches 399 m [1] .
From a geological point of view, the island of Moa and neighboring Badu are the remnants of the land bridge between the island of New Guinea and the continent of Australia that existed during the Pleistocene , and they are also the northern tip of the Cape York Peninsula , the occurrence of which dates from about the Holocene period. Moa Island itself was separated from the peninsula in about 8-6 millennium BC [2] .
The surface of Moa is predominantly rocky, covered with sparse vegetation [3] .
History
In 1908, the mission of the Anglican Church was founded on the island [4] .
Population
In 2006, 439 people lived on Moa. The island has two settlements: Kubin (201 people in 2006 [3] ), located on the south coast of Moa, and St. Paul's (238 people in 2006 [5] ) in the northern part of the island. Cubans are mainly inhabited by immigrants from the Prince of Wales island and other nearby islands, whose inhabitants were resettled on Moa in the 1870s. In St. Paul's mainly immigrants from the Pacific Islands .
