Simmons, Denise

Simmons grew up in Cambridge , where she graduated from a local school. She later received a bachelor of science degree in sociology from the University of Massachusetts Boston , as well as a master's degree in psychotherapy from Antioch College .

In 1982, Simmons opened its own business, Cambridgeport Insurance Agency. She was also a photo archivist and family photographer, and organized seminars for private and public companies at the local and national levels, including Cambridge public schools. For his work, Simmons has earned the praise of the local community ^[3] .

Simmons worked as a justice of the peace and notary public, after which she transferred to the civil service. In 1992, she was elected a member of the Cambridge school committee, and in 2002 became a member of the city council ^[4] .

On January 14, 2008, Simmons was unanimously elected mayor of the city at a meeting of the Cambridge City Council. She became the first African-American mayor in Massachusetts. ^[5]

After leaving the post of mayor, Simmons continues to work in the city council, where he is chairman of the committee for civil unity and co-chair of the committee for economic development and university relations ^[5] .
