Her musical career began in 1931 when she began working at Columbia Records . During the year, she sang about 20 songs, and That's Why Darkies Were Born became the most famous of them. In 1932, she starred in the film Hello Everybody! ( Rus. "Hello everyone!" ), along with stars Randolph Scott and Sally Blaine, and in 1943 in the military picture This is the Army ( Rus. "This is the army" ) performed the song God Bless America - the unofficial anthem of the United States of America.
Her most famous hits were River, Stay 'Way From My Door (1931), The Woodpecker Song (1940), The White Cliffs of Dover (1941), Rose O'Day (1941), I Don't Want to Walk Without You (1942), There Goes That Song Again (1944), Seems Like Old Times (1946) and Now Is the Hour (1947).
Kate Smith died of diabetes on June 17, 1986 in Raleigh , North Carolina , and was buried in a mausoleum at St. Agnes Cemetery in Lake Placid , Essex , NY .
