Biography

He was born on October 23, 1813 in Sabrodt (district of the commune Tauhe , Prussia ). He was educated at the University of Gottingen and Berlin , where he studied philosophy , languages and natural sciences. To improve knowledge in 1837 he moved to London and studied at the British Museum . He also visited France , Italy and Switzerland for educational purposes.

In 1842, Leichgardt traveled to Sydney , where he traveled in the mountains of East Australia from Newcastle to Brisbane .

Leichgardt's First Travel Route

In 1844, Leuchgardt made his first big trip to the central regions of Australia. Starting the route in Brisbane, he moved upstream of the Kondamain River, from where he turned into the mountainous regions of Queensland , crossed the Dawson , Mackenzie and Isaac rivers, rafted along the Belyando River, explored the course of the Berdekin River to its source and, crossing the watershed of the Mitchell River went down to the bay of Carpentaria . Going around this bay from the southwest side, Leichgardt reached the Roper River and headed west along its course. On December 17, 1845, he completed his voyage to Port Essington somewhat east of Darwin , from where he returned to Sydney by ship. During the expedition, Leichhardt kept a diary published in 1847 ( "Journal of an overland expedition in Australia from Moreton Bay to Port Essington, a Distance of Upwards of 3000 miles, during the years 1844-1845" ).

Disappearance

In 1846, Leichgardt made an attempt to cross the Australian mainland from east to west. Having passed Darling's lowlands, he, due to lack of food and quarrels with his companions, was forced to return. Despite this setback, Leichhardt again set off on a planned route in December 1847 . Repeatedly passing the Darling Lowland, he reached the Barku and Kugun rivers, from where he managed to send his last report received on the coast on April 3, 1848 . Since that time, it is considered to be missing. Since Leichhardt hoped to spend three years traveling, rescue expeditions began to be sent only after 1852, the latter taking place in 1869 , but the fate of Leichhardt and his eight companions remained unknown. Among the Aboriginal people, oral stories circulated about the murder of the expedition members (the Aborigines themselves). The things of the expedition members, or what was deemed by them, were found in different parts of Australia.

Works

In addition to the report on the first voyage, Leichgardt wrote a number of works published after his disappearance:

  • Beiträge zur Geologie von Australien (1855)
  • Briefe an seine Angehörigen (1881)
