Childhood and Youth
Carver Dana Andrews was born in Collins, Mississippi , the third of the nine children of Forrest Andrews and his wife Ennis. Soon the family moved to Texas , where his younger brothers and sisters were born - in total, 13 children were eventually born in the family, the 12th was the younger brother of Dana Steve , who also became an actor later.
Dan attended college in Houston , and also worked as an accountant for some time. In 1931, he went to Los Angeles to try to start a singing career. To earn a living, he changed several professions. One of Dan’s employers believed in his ability and paid for his training in opera and acting.
Career
Dan signed with Samuel Goldwin nine years after moving to Los Angeles. In 1940, he played his first film role in William Wyler ’s film “ A Man from the West ” with Gary Cooper . In 1943, Dana played with Henry Fonda in the movie The Case at Oaks Bow , as a lynching victim.
In 1944, Dan starred in the film “ Laura ” as a detective investigating the murder, and in 1946 in the film “ Best Years of Our Life ” as a soldier who returned from the war. These two of his works remain the most famous and significant. Noteworthy was the play of Dana in the film “ Where the Sidewalk Ends ” (1950).
By that time, the actor’s addiction to alcohol had already had a detrimental effect on his career. He began acting in the supporting roles of category B films , although he did not stop working in films until the mid-80s. In 1963, Dana was elected president of the United States Film Actors Guild .
Personal life
Dan Andrews married Janet Murray on the eve of 1932. She died in 1935, shortly after the birth of their son David (musician and composer, who died in 1964). On November 17, 1939, Dan married actress Mary Todd . They had three children: Catherine (1942), Stephen (1944) and Susan (1948). For 20 years, the family lived in Toluca Lake. When the children grew up, Dan and Mary moved to Studio City in a house bought from their friend, director Jacques Turner .
Dan managed to overcome alcoholism. In the last years of his life, he suffered from Alzheimer's . In 1992, Dan Andrews died of heart failure and pneumonia .
