Geography

The source of Cooper Creek (in this place it is called the Barku River) is located on the eastern slope of the Warrego Range in Queensland, in the Great Dividing Range . The river then flows northwest, flowing through the city of Blackall . Having reached the confluence with the Alice River, Cooper Creek (called Barku) heading southwest, flowing through Isisford . Joining with its main tributary, the Thomson River, the river continues its flow in a southwestern direction called Cooper Creek . After crossing the Queensland border, the river flows through the state of South Australia , where it flows into Lake Eyre (only during the rainy seasons). The average water discharge was about 2.3 km³, the largest water discharge was in 1950 - 12 km³, the lowest in 1902 - 0.02 km³. The length of the river is about 1420 km [1] , and the area of the river basin is about 297 547.29 km² [2] .

The climate of the area where the river flows is hot and arid. Precipitation is unstable. Local soils, vertisols , are quite fertile.

History

Traditionally, the river was important for the indigenous people of Australia, the Australian Aboriginal people who used it for transport purposes, as a source of fresh water and for fishing. The river was first explored in 1845 - 1846 by travelers Charles Sturt and Thomas Mitchell . Sturt named the river after his friend, the first supreme judge of South Australia, Charles Cooper. [1] In addition, the river is known for the fact that in the Cooper Creek area were found the bodies of members of an expedition that first crossed the continent from south to north in 1860 - 1861 . These were Australia's famous explorers Robert Burke and William Wills . The only survivor was the twenty-year-old John King, who, as part of the Burke detachment, reached the Gulf of Carpentaria , and after returning to the Cooper Creek area, he lived with local aborigines for a long time [3] . Currently, the territory through which the river flows is used for pasture.
