In 2013, Johns Hopkins University took 17th place in the Academic Ranking of World Universities [3] 15th place in the rating [4] , 11th place in the rating of the R&D of the largest contractors of military orders (and 7th place in 2014), [5] associated with the scientific and research activities of 36 Nobel Prize winners who worked here at different times [6] , Hopkins University is one of the most cited in the world [7] .
The largest university after the Massachusetts Institute of Technology [8] in the volume of military projects in the United States and, apparently, around the world (the amount approaching a billion dollars a year for military research - exceeding the military budget of many countries of the world). Content
History
The university opened on February 22, 1876 with the inauguration of its first president, Daniel Coit Gilman. This event was timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the formation of the United States and the birthday of the first US President George Washington .
D. Gilman in his speech outlined the mission of the university:

The mission he proposed remains unchanged today, its essence is simple, but Gilman’s words “Knowledge for the world” are still often repeated. The created educational institution eventually became a research university, called through science and research to promote knowledge for the benefit of the state and humanity. Gilman believed that study and research are interdependent. The implementation of Gilman’s philosophy at Johns Hopkins University and other institutions that later attracted university scholars reconstructed higher education in the United States , leading to the formation of the whole system of research universities that exists today. After more than 130 years, the university remains the world leader in education and research. . An outstanding composition of professors directs the work and research of students in music, the humanities , social and natural sciences , international studies, education, business and the medical professions. The same teachers and their research colleagues in the University’s Laboratory of Applied Physics have won more federal research grants annually since 1979 than any other university .
University Structure
The university has five campuses , including eight schools, the Peabody Conservatory and the Applied Physics Laboratory . Baltimore has three university campuses. On the Homewood campus in the northern part of the city are the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, an engineering and teacher school. On the campus in eastern Baltimore, there is the School of Medicine , Nurses and the School of Public Health and Health, as well as the Johns Hopkins Hospital . In the center of Baltimore are the Peabody Business School and Conservatory , incorporated into the university in 1977 . The Washington School of Advanced International Studies, Paul Nietze , is one of the world's leading schools specializing in the preparation of graduates in international relations , the world economy , diplomacy and politics. It has branches in Bologna , Italy and Nanjing , China . Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is a university division based in Howard County, near Laurel , Maryland . The laboratory does not conduct educational activities, but is exclusively engaged in research work, including secret work, and acts primarily as a defense contractor, fulfilling orders for the US Department of Defense and NASA .
Research
Research and development activities on the order of the armed forces , military branches and services, as well as contracting enterprises of the US military-industrial complex is the main source of income for the university. For the period from 2004 to 2014 the university moved from 16th to 8th place in the ranking of the largest contractors for the American military industry, with annual contracts totaling from $ 248 million in 2004 to $ 783 million in 2014. Among other research structures by order volume only the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is competing with it (for the indicated period $ 746 and $ 951 million, respectively), the University of Pennsylvania , which had previously competed with Johns Hopkins University in terms of the volume of orders, has dropped out of the past twenty years [5] .

US Women's Struggle for Higher Education
In the 19th century, women in the United States had the opportunity to receive higher education, and admission to individual universities and individual faculties was opened. At Johns Hopkins University, only the medical department was opened for women. The admission of women to other faculties was opened only under President Ira Remsen (1907).
Christina Ladd-Franklin became the first woman at Johns Hopkins University to apply for a PhD in mathematics (1882). However, the trustees rejected her degree and refused to amend the agreement on the admission of women; Ladd-Franklin got her degree only 44 years later. The first woman with a PhD at the university was Florence Bascombe in 1893.
