Toyota Starlet ( ト ヨ タ ・ ス タ ー レ ッ ト , ˈstaːlət ) is a small car manufactured by Toyota from 1973 to 1999. Starlet replaced Publica , retaining the “P” code in the numbering of the bodies. The first generation in some markets was sold as Publica Starlet . In Japan, the car was available through the Toyota Corolla Store dealer network.

The first was a sporty turbocharged Starlet, produced in three generations: Turbo S (EP71, 1986-1999), GT turbo (EP82, 1990-1995) and Glanza V (EP91, 1996-1999). The second was Sera , which was produced in the early 1990s and officially sold only in Japan, which received a two-door coupe with doors with butterfly wings , chassis and Starlet units. About 16,000 units were produced of these models.
From 1981 to 1984, it was exported to North America, after which it was replaced by Corolla FX in the North American line of Toyota models. In 1999, cars in most markets were replaced by Echo / Yaris , but Toyota did not produce a city car for Europe until 2005, when Aygo appeared. Another Japanese alternative was the bB subcompact , which is sold in the US as the Scion xB .

First Generation
Originally launched in April 1973 as the Publica Starlet 40 series, the Starlet (P40 / P50, 1973-1978) was available with engines of 1000 cm³ and 1200 cm³. The car received rear-wheel drive. Overall, the car looked like a shorter Corolla . The car was originally produced in the bodies of a two-door sedan and a three-door station wagon. A four-door sedan appeared in October 1973. Options offered included Standard, Deluxe, Hi-Deluxe, ST and SR. This generation has never been sold in Europe, despite the popularity (particularly in the UK) of similar cars such as the Datsun Cherry , Fiat 127 and Renault 5 .
Second Generation
Third Generation
In the third generation (P70, 1985-1989), front-wheel drive was more suitable for compact class machines. Despite this, the sporty image of the car was maintained during the development of the turbocharged version. Due to the low prices for the main car models, it became possible to produce the optimal number of cars. This model was in great demand in Asian countries. With the transition to front-wheel drive was developed, fundamental in the future , a series of engines E. On the third generation of Toyota Starlet installed the most diverse line of engines. It is also worth noting that it was in this generation that the installation of a diesel engine was first tested and then fixed. Of the innovations in the chassis, the car had shock absorbers with a TEMS stiffness control system. The following engines were installed on this vehicle:
- 1N (1500 cc) - diesel. 54 h.p.
- 1EL (1000 ss) 55 h.p. Gasoline, carburetor. Installed on cars for the Asian and European markets. The index L indicates the transverse position of the engine (characteristic of front-wheel drive.)
- 2EL (1300 cc) 65 hp increased to 1.3 liters analogue of the previous engine. Also only for Asian and European markets.
- 2ELU - (analog 2EL) 72l.s. Equipped with a catalytic converter, as required by Japanese environmental standards. It was produced only for the domestic market.
- 2E-ELU (1300 cc) 82 hp Petrol, equipped with an electronic multi-point fuel injection system.
- 2E-TELU (1300 cc) 110 h.p. This model had an electronic multi-point injection system (EFI - Electronic Fuel Injection) and was also equipped with a turbocharging system. In earlier versions of CT12, later CT9.
It is worth noting that the engines of the 1E and 2E series were the first engines to receive 3 valves per cylinder (2 inlet, 1 exhaust) and one camshaft. This contributed to high efficiency and good returns. A turbocharged version of the 2E-TELU was installed on the Toyota Starlet in the Turbo S and Turbo R trim levels, the main difference of which was more sports seats with lateral support, a special interior design, aerodynamic body kits and spoilers. The maximum engine power was 110 hp. With the relatively low weight of the car, manufacturers managed to create a light, economical car with good dynamics .
Fourth Generation
In the 4th generation (P80, 1989-1995) sports and GT modifications are presented. The latest GT model is equipped with 4 round headlights and is an impressive, somewhat aggressive sight. The GT was presented with a single 4E-FTE engine. This is a 4-cylinder 16-valve turbocharged engine (CT-9 turbocharger). The Starlet GT has proven itself to be reliable, easy to operate and maintain, and also possessing exceptional dynamic performance in its class. Quite simply, engine power rises to 150 liters. with. by increasing the turbocharging pressure to 0.85 bar, installing a direct-flow exhaust and a more powerful fuel pump. After these improvements, it is necessary to adjust the fuel mixture by installing a broadband lambda probe or AFC (air-flow converter).
Options GT and Gi underwent two restyling: in 1993 and the end of 1994. The main changes in 1993 were the updated dashboard, the rear optics of the car, the bracket between the taillights (lost the glowing GT logo), in 1994 the design of the third door changed (the bracket that visually aligns the taillights, was replaced by separate modules to complete the form headlights), as well as a modified bumper, front optics (received lenses and a more modern appearance), as well as a radiator grill. In other trim levels, the front optics did not receive changes for the entire production period of the 80th series. The GT and Gi were equipped with an automatic transmission with 4 gears with electronic control of the operating mode. Two modes were available: PWR (priority when choosing a transmission with a transmission was given to a lower gear and working at higher speeds, the inclusion of a lower gear (kickdown) was achieved with a slight pressure on the accelerator pedal) and MANU (“winter” mode, the car always started from second gear to reduce the chance of slipping drive wheels).
The standard equipment of the GT and Gi trim levels included front and rear strut cup racks, designed to increase the rigidity of the body. Front - two-point, rear - three-point. The front seats, unlike the "civilian versions", have pronounced lateral support and a sporty design.
The turbocharged version of the car gained a good position in the market, and in the next generation of bodies (90th series), there was also a turbo version of the car, this time called “Glanza”.
