The commander of the tank company of the 89th tank brigade, Lieutenant Yaremchuk, captured the 2nd tank on October 6, 1944 and held the bridge over the Krozhenta river in the town of Kelma (Kelme, Lithuania) until the main forces of the brigade approached.
One of the detachments of the 13th Guards Rifle Corps of General A.I. Lopatin was to capture a bridge over the Krozhent River. 50 riflemen and 6 tanks under the general command of Lieutenant D.O. Yaremchuk at night suddenly broke into the enemy’s position 800 meters southeast of the city. In a fierce battle, the guards captured two anti-tank batteries that covered the bridge. 20 submachine gunners in two tanks quickly broke through to the 100-ton reinforced concrete bridge. A hot battle ensued with guards, which included sappers who prepared the bridge for the explosion. Every second he could fly into the air.
So it would have happened if the forty-six-year-old participant in the civil war, sapper Artyom Mikhailovich Plysenko, with four young comrades had not been among the machine gunners. While there was a battle with the guards, they scattered across the bridge in order to neutralize the explosives. Plysenko managed to literally instantly forestall the explosion, and at that time two tanks under the command of Lieutenant V.V. Knyazev, having slipped a bridge, crashed into the artillery column in a hurry of darkness, hurrying to slip into the rear. They worked the road so diligently that only 5 corrupted tractors remained on it, and 9 guns, 4 mortars, 4 anti-aircraft guns and about 50 corpses. D.O. Yaremchuk, A.M. Plysenko and V.V. Knyazev were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.- Hero of the Soviet Union Marshal of the Soviet Union Baghramyan I.Kh. So we went to victory. - M: Military Publishing, 1977.- S. 452.
