Scheckter, Jan

Ian Scheckter ( African: Ian Scheckter , August 22, 1947 , East London ) - South African race car driver, participant in the Formula 1 world championship racing. The older brother of the 1979 Formula 1 world champion Jody Scheckter and uncle of the IRL series driver Thomas Scheckter .

Biography

In 1972, he won the Formula Ford Motor Racing Championship in South Africa, and in 1974 he made his debut in the Formula 1 World Championship at his home Grand Prix in Kyalami , where he finished 13th with two laps behind the winner. In 1975, he won the Formula 1 South African Championship, outperforming the five-time winner of this series Dave Charlton at the end of the season, he also became the Formula Atlantic South African champion and three times started in the Formula 1 World Championship. In 1976, he again became the champion of the Formula Atlantic. In 1977, he spent an unsuccessful season in the Formula 1 World Championship, playing for the March team, only twice got to the finish line in races and did not score points. After returning to local auto racing in South Africa, he twice more won the Formula Atlantic championship, in 1983-1984 he became the champion of Formula South Africa.
