Ciudad del Este ( Spanish: Ciudad del Este ) is the second largest city in Paraguay and the administrative center of the department of Alto Parana . This is, above all, a shopping and shopping center. The population is about 274 thousand people.

The city was founded in 1957 on the Parana River on the border with Brazil and was called Puerto Flor de Lys. Later it was renamed in honor of the Paraguayan President Alfredo Stroessner in Puerto Presidente Stroessner, and after its overthrow in 1989, it received its current name - Ciudad del Este ( Eastern City ).
The city is part of the so-called “area of three borders” - a duty-free zone . Thus, the main attractions of Ciudad del Este are its shops.
The city is divided by direct streets into separate neighborhoods populated on a national basis. The bulk of the population of Asian descent: Thais , Koreans , Arabs and Iranians , so there are many mosques and pagodas .
The Taiwanese government paid for the construction of the city hall in exchange for supporting Paraguay at the UN , so the Taiwan flag flutters on the building.
Thanks to the construction of the world's most powerful Itaipu hydroelectric station [1], the city has grown rapidly. The Friendship Bridge across the Parana River connects Ciudad del Este with the neighboring Brazilian city of Foz do Iguacu . The bridge was opened in 1965 , its length is just over 552 meters. It is also a border crossing surrounded by a high lattice throughout its length.

Economics
Ciudad del Este produces about 60% of Paraguay's GDP , it is the third largest free economic zone in the world after Miami and Hong Kong [2] . The Paraguayan part of the administration of the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Station , Itaipu Binacional , which is owned in equal parts by Brazil and Paraguay, is located here. The economy of the city (and Paraguay as a whole) is focused on the economy of Brazil, since 95% of the electricity produced by Itaipu is sold to Brazil (annually in the amount of 300 million US dollars). Every day, many Brazilians cross the border to buy cheap goods in Ciudad del Este, mainly consumer electronics, with an annual turnover of $ 1.2 billion. .
The main occupation of the population is trade and smuggling . Ciudad del Este is often referred to as "Latin American Hong Kong." The city center is a huge market. Only a small fraction of this trade is legal, the rest is smuggling into neighboring Argentina and Brazil. Most of the products are fakes of famous brands [3] . According to some reports, the trade turnover of this “ black market ” is five times the volume of the national economy , which leads to an increase in crime.

In the suburbs is located the international airport " Guarani " [4] .
Climate
The climate in Ciudad del Este is close to temperate ; it is in a moderately warm zone without regular snow cover. A significant amount of rainfall occurs during the year, even during the driest months [5] . According to the Köppen climate classification , a humid subtropical climate (Cfa index) with uniform moisture and hot summers.
