He graduated from the Saratov Vocational School, then in 1916 the St. Petersburg Conservatory . As a student in 1911 he made his debut on the stage of the Alexander Sheremetev Musical-Historical Society.
Since 1917 in the troupe of the Mariinsky Theater . The first performer of the part of the Overseer in Dmitry Shostakovich ’s opera “The Nose” ( 1930 ), as well as the parts of Zubarev (“Ice and Steel” by Vladimir Deshevov , 1929 ), Alibay (“Black Yar” by Andrey Pashchenko , 1931 ), Zhmykh (“Schors” by George Fardi , 1938 ), the Old Cossack ("Rebellion" by Leon Hodge-Einatov , 1938 ). He also participated in the Soviet premieres of Sergei Prokofiev ’s opera “ Love for Three Oranges ” (Prince) and Richard Strauss's “Cavalier of Roses” (Singer).
Honored Artist of the RSFSR ( 1939 ).
During the Leningrad blockade in 1942, he went missing. It was later discovered that Alexander Mikhailovich Kabanov became a victim of cannibals ( Memoirs of a relative of the singer ).
