Shropshire , formerly Salop, is a ceremonial county and unitary unit (as part of) in the west of England . It is part of the West Midland region . The capital is Shrewsbury , the largest city is Telford .

Geography

The ceremonial county of Shropshire occupies an area of ​​3487 km² (13th place) and borders on the west of Wales , in the north on the ceremonial county of Cheshire , in the east on the ceremonial county of Staffordshire , in the southeast on the ceremonial county of Worcestershire , in the south on the ceremonial county of Herefordshire .

The ceremonial county of Shropshire consists of the politically independent unitary units of Shropshire and Telford and Rickin .

The Shropshire unitary unit covers an area of ​​3197 km² (14th place) and its borders almost completely coincide with the boundaries of the ceremonial county, except that in the northeast, the Shropshire unitary unit borders the unitary unit of Telford and Rickin .

The navigable river Severn County is divided into two parts: northern, flat, cultivated as arable land, and southern, hilly, more suitable for cattle breeding [1] .

In the southern part there are mountain ranges Long Mind (617 m, English ) and Kli-Gils (550 m, English ). In the center of the county is Mount Vrekin (377 m, English ) [1] .

Demographics

449 thousand people live on the territory of the ceremonial county of Shropshire (42nd place among non-metropolitan counties; data from 2004 ), with an average population density of 129 people / km².

Policy

The ceremonial county of Shropshire does not have a single municipal authority. Power is divided between independent councils of unitary units Shropshire and Telford and Rickin .

The Shropshire Unitary Council consists of 74 deputies elected in 63 constituencies. As a result of recent elections, 52 seats on the council are held by conservatives [3] .

In the city of Shrewsbury , the capital of Shropshire, the professional football club Shrewsbury Town , based in the Second Football League, is based . Shrewsbury Town hosts rivals at New Midow Stadium (9,000 spectators).
