Innsbruck Austria was twice the capital of the Winter Olympic Games ( 1964 and 1976 ).
The Austrians perform much more successfully at the Winter Olympics than at the summer. Among the famous Austrian skiers are Tony Seiler , Stefan Eberharter , Benny Reich , Herman Mayer , Michaela Dorfmeister and many others.
Also, in recent years, Austrians have been successful in ski jumping. Olympic champions and multiple world champions are Thomas Morgenstern , Andreas Kofler , Gregor Schlierenzauer , Wolfgang Loitzl .
In ski biathlon, the Austrian national team led by Felix Gottwald successfully performed at the 2006 and 2010 Games.
Before World War II, the Austrians were one of the leaders in world figure skating, but in the 1950s and 1960s, their success declined, the last Olympic medal in this sport was won in 1972.
In summer sports, the Austrians won the largest number of Olympic awards in kayaking and canoeing (14) and swimming (12). In no other sport do they have 10 awards. In general, at the last summer Olympics, the Austrians perform unsuccessfully: at the 6 Games in 1992-2012, 4 times Austria was left without gold awards at all. In the entire history of the Summer Games, only 1 time did the Austrians manage to win more than 10 awards: this happened in 1936 in Berlin.
