Biography
Biographical information about him is scarce, unclear, and often contradictory. By origin, he was most likely a Serb — the “Serb,” as he is called in the manuscripts — lived first on Athos [2] , while an analysis of the language of his early works suggests that Pakhomiy was probably Russian by origin [3] .
Presumably between 1429 and 1438 in the rank of hieromonk arrived from Athos to Novgorod , and in 1440 he moved to the Grand Duchy of Moscow .
Pakhomiy spent most of his life in Russia in Moscow and the Trinity-Sergius Monastery , where he worked on compiling lives and writing off books. He also lived in Novgorod (1458-1462) [2] .
These studies brought him fame as an outstanding stylist and master of life writing, and around 1470 he was called to Novgorod by Archbishop Jonah to compose the lives of Novgorod saints . Most of the lives compiled by Pachomius commissioned [4] .
According to contemporaries, he was a very worthy monk, "a pious husband, passing a monastic life with all good fears."
Where and when he died is unknown; in any case, not earlier than 1484, - not earlier than this year, Pachomius, ascribed to him in manuscripts “The Life of the Novgorod Archbishop Moses” [2] , could be composed.
Style and Meaning
He was well versed in the style of Slavic liturgical literature . While working on his books, Pakhomius, like many authors of that time, did not see anything reprehensible in borrowing from other people's works, in repetitions of himself (especially in introductory notes), in creating his own editions - by a little revision of the text, a mosaic combination and just adding a preface and afterword of the works of others. The prosaic works of Pachomius Logofet are usually constructed according to a clear outline: preface, main part, conclusion. In a short time he compiled numerous lives of saints, whose life he knew practically nothing. In his writings, Pachomius was quite free of historical facts and, for the sake of the instructive story, was not shy about his own additions. The historical significance of most of the lives compiled by him is extremely insignificant [2] .
At the same time, the obvious literary talent, the “charm” of style and the rhetorical embellishment of the Pakhomiev’s lives have fascinated Russian everyday literature for a long time. It was Pachomius who laid the foundation of a certain “ canon ” on Russian soil, which is a set of ready-made clichés suitable for writing a life for almost any saint, all the historical information about which could be only his name, place of achievement and type of ascetic life [5] .
