Biography

Born on September 13, 1924 in Lyon , France. He first studied electrical engineering at the University of Lyon, but later entered the Paris Conservatory, where he worked in the class of percussion instruments and composition. Among his teachers was the composer Arthur Onegger . In 1946 he made his debut as a performer in the theater company Jean-Louis Barrot , playing in a non-standard duet with Pierre Boulez (piano and Martenot waves ).

In the early fifties, he worked as the music director of the National People’s Theater in Paris, with whom he was on tour in Moscow in the 1950s.

The author of music for films directed by David Lina : " Lawrence of Arabia " (1962), " Doctor Zhivago " (1965) and " A Trip to India " (1984). Jarre won three Oscars for music for these films. When working on "Doctor Zhivago" I tried to imitate the sound of the orchestra of Russian folk instruments, typing in San Francisco performers among Russian émigrés. Jarre is also the author of the music for the films “ Night of the Generals ” (1967), “ Society of Dead Poets ” (1989) and “The Ghost ” (1990) (his music based on the famous hit Unchained Melody sounds in the final scene of the film).

Jarre wrote the music for more than 150 motion pictures and collaborated with such directors as Alfred Hitchcock , Luchino Visconti , John Houston , John Frankenheimer , Karel Reish , Peter Weir . He also wrote music for television films (“ Jesus of Nazareth, ” directed by Franco Zeffirelli ).

The author of five ballets, the most famous of which, “ Notre Dame de Paris ”, was staged at the Paris Opera in 1965 (choreographer Roland Petit , set design by R. Allio, costumes by Yves Saint Laurent ). Later, this ballet was included in the repertoire of the Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theater. Kirov (1978) and the Bolshoi Theater (2003).

Since the 1980s, Maurice Jarre has paid much attention to electronic music. Among such works of his soundtracks to the films " Fatal Attraction " (1987), " Year of Dangerous Life " ( 1983 ) and " There is no way out " (1987). His style is close to electronic and acoustic music for the films “ Mosquito Coast ” (1986), “ Gorillas in the Fog ” (1988), “ Society of Dead Poets ” (1989) and “ Jacob 's Ladder ” (1990).

He died on March 28, 2009 in Los Angeles (USA).

Family

Maurice Jarre is the father of two sons and a daughter from different marriages. His eldest son, Jean-Michel Jarre, is a musician and electronic music pioneer. According to him, he drew the idea of ​​combining music and visual effects from experiments conducted by his father and his friends in the late 50s. The younger son, Kevin Jarre , became a screenwriter. In total, Maurice Jarre was married 4 times:

  • in the 1940s, after World War II, his wife was Francette Peyot, mother of Jean-Michel Jarre .
  • in 1965-1967, his wife was a French actress Dani Savall , mother of daughter Jarre Stephanie (Stephanie Jarre).
