History

From the origins to the modern era (1912-1989)

The match between Nacional Madeira and Tenerife in 1925.

It was founded on November 21, 1912 as “Sporting Tenerife” as a result of the merger of several football clubs of the island into one. Sporting Tenerife became the champion of the Canary Islands three times in a row in 1914, 1915 and 1916, which no team could achieve after it. It is known that in 1915 Sporting Tenerife visited Andalusia , where he defeated Sevilla and Cadiz. In 1922, the leadership changed in the club, and the team changed its name to Deportivo Tenerife. A remarkable detail is that until 2008, 1922 was considered the club’s birth year. This fact aroused the indignation of many historians until in 2008 the leadership of Tenerife established a special commission to put an end to all disagreements. According to the results of the investigation, the commission recognized 1912 as the year of birth of the team. [1] In 1925, the team moved to Eliodora Rodriguez Lopez , the stadium that is still the club’s home arena.

Despite the launch of La Liga in 1928, Deportivo Tenerife played at the regional level for more than a decade. The club has repeatedly become the champion of the Canary Islands, as well as the owner of various regional trophies. The years of World War II and the post-war years became a serious test for Deportivo Tenerife. The club stood on the verge of disbanding several times, barely avoiding the worst. The first opportunity to enter the Segund was Deportivo Tenerife in 1950, but was only able to enter it in 1953.

“Deportivo Tenerife” made its debut in Example in 1961, however, following the results of the first season, he returned to Segunda. In 1968, after several unsuccessful years, the club flies to Segunda B. Continuing to fail, Deportivo Tenerife still manages to return to Segunda in 1971, and stay in it until 1978. In 1983, through the efforts of the club’s president Pepe Lopez, the club returned to Segunda, where after 3 hesitant seasons, it was again declining in class.

In 1986, “Deportivo Tenerife” receives the new president - Javier Perez. At this point, the team plays in Segund B and has an impressive debt of 320 million pesetas. Perez attracts Martin Marrero to work with the team, and he manages to bring the team to Segunda following the results of the 1986/87 season. A notable detail of this success was the club’s unbeaten run in 21 matches.

Under the leadership of Jupp Hainkes, the club has achieved unprecedented success in the UEFA Cup.

Golden years (1989-1999)

After a long 27 years, Tenerife burst into Example in the 1989/90 season. The first years, demonstrating not the best results, the club often managed to save from being close to the relegation zone, but the 1992/93 season changed a lot. Under the leadership of Jorge Valdano , Tenerife achieves its highest result in history - 5th place. Also in the same season, the club reaches the semifinal of the King’s Cup, setting yet another historical bar for itself. This success gives Tenerife the opportunity to make its debut in the UEFA Cup in the 1993/94 season, where after passing the French Auxerre and the Greek Olympiacos , it flies out at 1/16 of the Italian Juventus despite a home victory over the Italians 2: 1 . According to the results of the 1995/96 season, player Juan Antonio Pizzi becomes the owner of the Pichichi trophy. In 1996, under the leadership of Jupp Hainkes, the club again took 5th position in the championship. In the 1996/97 season, Tenerife begins another campaign for the UEFA Cup, but is inferior to the German Schalke 04 in the semifinal of the tournament. [2]

Return to the Segunda (1999-present)

The memorial wall of Rommel Fernandez on " Eliodor Rodriguez Lopez ".

After 10 consecutive seasons in the Spanish football elite, Tenerife is returning to Segunda again. In many ways, the inexpedient financial policy of the club’s leadership contributed to this, namely the involvement of Domingos Pasiensa , the most expensive player in the history of Tenerife, as well as the signing of football players like Vidmar and Andersson. On June 17, 2001, after two years in the Segund, Raf Benitez hardly managed to provide Tenerife with an exit from Example through the playoffs. After completing his work at the club, Benitez hands over the affairs to Pepe Mel , under whose leadership the club extremely unsuccessfully begins performances in the Example. Soon the crisis worsened, and in 2002 Mela, as a coach, replaced Javier Clemente , who also turned out to be powerless in trying to stop the fall of Tenerife. According to the results of the 2001/02 season, Tenerife flies to Segunda, and the season itself is marked by hostility between fans and club players. [3] The club’s president, Javier Pérez, who has occupied him since 1986, also loses his seat. [four]

The club meets 2005 with a debt of 54 million euros. Serious instability within the team nearly ends for Tenerife by relegation to Segunda B. Club president Viktor Perez Ascanio resigns in 2006. This year was marked by a serious scandal in which Tenerife was embroiled in due to the activities of a number of businessmen of the island and politician Paulino Rivero , accused of speculation, corruption and attempts to do business under the guise of a club. [5] Entrepreneur Miguel Concepcion becomes the new president of the club, and Tenerife acquires some economic stability with his arrival. Concepcion manages to reduce the club’s debt to 30 million euros, which at first didn’t cause much public suspicion, until the first rumors of speculation with the sale of land appeared, which again became an occasion for criticism of the club’s leadership from journalists to political parties. [6] [7] [8]

After several years in the Segund, according to the results of the 2008/09 season, Tenerife manages to return to Example, the club fans receive the award of the best fans of the season from La League management. However, again, the wrong policy within the club, as well as the debts still existing, lead Tenerife to another rapid failure, the club flies to Segunda again. During the 2010/11 season, the club’s management has allocated great resources to the sports director of the Altre club to return to Example. His activities in this direction are very criticized by the fans. The beginning of the season, which began with a series of serious failures in both the championship and the cup, led to the resignation of the Tenerife coach, Gonzalo Arconada . Soon he was temporarily replaced by double coach Alfredo Merino , until Juan Carlos Mandia received his appointment, also not showing the expected results. In an attempt to reassure fans, the club removes Oltra from office, appointing Juanho Lorenzo as Tenerife's new sports director. Having decided to save the club from relegation, Juanho Lorenzo soon displaces Mandia, due to the fact that the specialist could not justify the trust of the new sports director. Antonio Tapia is being recruited as a coach, but he also fails to save Tenerife from relegation to Segunda B.

In the 2011/12 season, despite internal instability and a change in a number of coaches, Tenerife manages to take 2nd place in its group and reach the playoffs, where after a series of successes it was eliminated by Ponferradina . [9] This season, fans have shown incredible dedication and support for their team in difficult times. In the 2012/13 season, the club is headed by Alvaro Server. [10] “Tenerife” again manages to get into the playoffs, and following its results will return to the Segunda. Despite the good start of the next stage in the Segund, in the 2014/15 season the club was close to relegation to Segund B. [11]

In the 2016/17 season, “Tenerife” reached the final of the playoffs for the right to enter Example, but minimally lost to Getafe a ticket to the elite division. [12] [13]

Stadium

Estadio Rodriguez Lopez during the Tenerife- Real Sociedad match in 2008.

Heliodoro Rodríguez López , owned by Cabildo de Tenerife. It has 24,000 seats. It is 107 meters long and 70 meters wide, making it the stadium with the largest surface area of the Canary Islands. [14] [15]

His inauguration took place on July 25, 1925. At first it was land baptized with the name of the Stadium. The first match to be held at the stadium was friendly between Tenerife and the Marino Football Club in Gran Canaria with a victory for the chicharros (2: 1). In 1949, the first important reforms were carried out by the then President Heliodoro Rodriguez, and the stadium was almost completely renovated. Upon completion of the mentioned works, the stadium received its current name. At that time, it barely reached 15,000 places.

On August 31, 1952, Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez opened the grass in a friendly match against Atlético de Madrid, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

After promotion to the first division in the 1988-1989 season and subsequent constancy the following year, the increase in settlements was increased, which did not reach the classification for UEFA for the first time. In the summer of 1992, work began on a new step, Gol, which would have two bodies equal to the structure of the Tribune. The upper part of this infrastructure can be called the Amphitheater. At that time, we switched to a few meters of the playing field to the nascent one, providing him with new drainage. A new tunnel of locker rooms and benches was also built. This work took place during the 1992-1993 season and left a potential of almost 20,000 places.

Rodriguez Lopez Stadium before the start of the game.

In the 1995-1996 campaign, new Herradura stands began to be used. What happened was that an atypical second body, an iron structure, and wooden planks. After this new expansion, 22,000 seats were reached.

The culmination of the last phase began in 2001, when the tribune of San Sebastian Alta was built, for which all the stadiums already had two floors. The inauguration of January 4, 2001 at the new podium of San Sebastian completed a lengthy renovation work in which the blue and white stadium was exposed for three decades. In this new rostrum, modern VIP-boxes were installed in the season 2009-2010. This became a reality after improvements to the stadium, which also included the club’s new offices, its official store and museum.

At the end of all work, the capacity of the stadium is installed in the current 24,000 settlements, which until now have not reached absolute height.

The construction of a large stadium with more than 40,000 spectators was lifted from the club and Cabildo, but this project never flourished. [16]

Escudo

The current CDTenerife shield reflects the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Its center has the shield of the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (with titles very loyal, noble,

Canary Derby

One of the rather famous derby on the football map of Spain between the two most powerful teams of the Canary Islands archipelago - Tenerife and Las Palmas. Despite the fact that Tenerife is much older and at the regional level not only achieved more, but also created the football history of the archipelago, at the national level, Las Palmas took a little further, proving that it is a worthy competitor for the right to be considered the best Canary Islands team.
