Biography
Boris Panin was born in Nizhny Novgorod in a working class family. He studied at school number 4 of the Soviet (now Nizhny Novgorod ) district, was fond of sports, dreamed of becoming a pilot. After completing 7 classes he worked at the plant named after M.V. Frunze. First, as a mechanic’s apprentice, and then as a mechanic in a mechanical workshop No. 5. From 1938 to 1940 he studied at the Gorky Aero Club named after Baranov.
In 1940 he was drafted into the army. In 1941 he graduated from the Engels Military Aviation Pilot School.
Since October 1942, he participated in the Great Patriotic War , was a pilot, and then a flight commander of the 321st (since March 18, 1943 - 82nd Guards ) bomber aviation regiment. He joined the party at the front. He fought on the Kalinin , Volkhov , Northwest and Voronezh fronts . Participated in defensive battles in the Kalinin region , breaking the blockade of Leningrad , in the Battle of Kursk .
Panin flew on a diving bomber Pe-2 and was one of the best pilots of the formation. He was one of the first to perform a barrel barrel aerobatics on the Pe-2, demonstrating the ability to use a bomber as a fighter . His initiative to double the bomb load found followers among other pilots.
On March 7, 1943, when bombing a cluster of tanks and infantry of the enemy, a group of Pe-2 aircraft came under heavy fire from anti-aircraft artillery. Panin, having failed, dived and suppressed the fire of two batteries, providing the Soviet aircraft with the mission without loss.
On May 8, 1943, while completing the task of photographing the enemy’s Kharkov air hub, Panin’s plane was attacked 11 times by enemy fighters. Panin’s crew shot down one German plane and, breaking away from the pursuit of fighters, returned to the object, photographed the enemy airfield and returned safely to the base.
On June 17, 1943, Panin defeated four enemy fighters who attacked his bomber 12 times. One fighter was shot down, and, having completed the mission, Panin safely returned to his airfield.
By August 1943, Panin made 57 sorties on a Pe-2 bomber to bombard important enemy targets (of which 25 were single-handedly for reconnaissance and photography in the interests of artillery command). He shot down 3 enemy aircraft.
On August 4, 1943, Boris Panin and his crew — navigator D.M. Adamyanets and gunner-gunner V.P. Ermolaev — participated in the liberation of Belgorod and died in the performance of a combat mission.
For courage and heroism shown in battles with the Nazi invaders, by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of September 2, 1943, Guard Lieutenant Panin Boris Vladimirovich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union (posthumous). By order of the Minister of Defense of the USSR of December 27, 1957, his name was forever listed in the guards aviation unit.
He was buried in the village of Ilovka in the Alekseevsky district of the Belgorod region in the mass grave of 109 Soviet soldiers who died in battles with the Nazi invaders.
