History
The company was founded in 1987 with the aim of occupying the electronic toy market, which at that time was not interested in other Brazilian toy manufacturers. Pretty soon, the company made a deal with Sega , the Japanese video game giant, becoming its exclusive representative. The company's first product was an electronic toy Zillion, similar to Q-Zar . Subsequently, the company released in Brazil all Sega game consoles, from Master System to Dreamcast . The company's success in the video game market has made toys an insignificant part of its business.
Partnership with Tectoy provided Sega with a significant advantage over its main competitor, Nintendo , in the Brazilian market. Although unlicensed clones of the Nintendo Entertainment System were widespread in Brazil, Nintendo did not have official representatives in this country until 1993. Therefore, the Master System game console was a great success in Brazil, and Tectoy even released some Brazil-exclusive games that were not released in other countries. In the 1990s, the company had about 80% of the official video game market in Brazil.
Tectoy translated some games into Portuguese , including the first three parts of the game series Phantasy Star , Shining in the Darkness, and Riven (including voice dubbing ).
Localization of some games was also performed, including the replacement of characters with local licenses for characters from Brazilian comics and cartoons . So, the Teddy Boy game became Geraldinho , some parts of the Wonder Boy game series became Monica's Gang games, and the character El Chapulin Colorado (“Chapolim Colorado”) was introduced in the game Ghost House .
In addition, the company also released several unique ports and original games. Among these games are the Street Fighter II port for the Master System, Duke Nukem 3D for Mega Drive (a simplified version of the game using the graphics and sound of the original game) and the original Woody Woodpecker game for Mega Drive. Two games for Mega Drive were developed based on the Brazilian television show, similar to the show “ Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? ".
Due to the weakening position of Sega in the market of game consoles, even before the cessation of support for Dreamcast and Sega exit this market, Tectoy decided to diversify the business. Now the company’s activities include the sale of karaoke devices, DVD-players and MP3-players , as well as the content of the Brazilian servers of the game Ragnarok Online . In 2005, Tectoy Mobile was established to distribute mobile phone games in Brazil. This division publishes games from companies such as Sega Mobile , In-Fusio and Bandai . The company also continues to release obsolete Sega game consoles, mostly versions of Mega Drive with integrated games.
The company’s most popular electronic toy was Pense Bem . She used books with questions of various subjects (history, geography, mathematics, etc.). The player had to choose an answer from several options by pressing the desired button, the toy signaled the correct choice. Some toy books used popular characters, including Monica's Gang, Sonic the Hedgehog , Dinosaurs, and Donald Duck .
