Deus vult

Deus vult (from Latin - “This is what God wants”, otherwise “To the will of God”; French Dieu le veut ) - the cry of Christians during the proclamation of the first crusade by Pope Urban II at Clermont Cathedral in 1095 . Also the battle cry of Gottfried of Bouillon (c. 1060–1100) [1] and his crusaders.

Deus lo vult (from lat. - “God wants it”), a derivative phrase in vulgar, rather than classical Latin , is the motto of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem , a Catholic military order .

Admiral Alfred Thayer Mahan , a Protestant bishop , used the expression for his argument “the dominion of Christ” as “essentially imperial” and that “Christianity and war” had much in common: ““ Deus vult! ”I say. It was a cry of the crusaders and puritan, and I doubt that a person has ever said anything more noble. " [2]

The phrase “Deus vult” is mentioned in a historical context in the computer game Crusader Kings 2 (2012). Later, the expression grew into an Internet meme , gaining popularity among Donald Trump supporters during the 2016 US presidential election . The phrase has become “a kind of code word, a hashtag common in right social networks and graffiti [3] .
