Geography

The area is located in the southeast of the Transbaikal Territory . The area has a border with China and Mongolia . The main ranges: Argun, Klichkinsky and part of Nerchinsky with an average height not exceeding 900 m. Between the ranges there are hilly-bumpy and low-mountain areas, separated by vast depressions and dry depressions. The lowlands are occupied by salt marshes and sometimes salt lakes. There are deposits and manifestations of agates, fluorite, etc.: Agatovaya Sopka, Abagaytuyskoe, Nagadan, etc. The climate is sharply continental with hot summers and cold winters. The average July temperature is +20.6 ° C (maximum +38 ° C), the average January temperature is −28 ÷ −30 ° C (abs. Minimum −43 ° C. The average annual rainfall does not exceed 300 mm. The growing season lasts 150 days and more.

In the southeast, on the border with China , the river flows. Argun . The most widespread are chernozem, chestnut powdery-carbonate and meadow-chernozem deep-freezing soils, and salt marshes are found. In the Argun valley, alluvial-meadow deep-freezing soils. The steppe dominates in the area, which is replaced only by meadows in river valleys and vast depressions. Steppes forbs-cereals, tansy-forbs, cereals-tansy-blood-bread. Meadows are wild, barley, and pikulnik-steppe.

Economics

Until the mid-1990s, the area was known for mining enterprises. The Abagaytuysky fluorite deposit was exploited. The Abagaytuy mine operates. Since the late 1990s, due to the border situation, trade ties with China have been strengthened. There is a transition " Zabaykalsk - Manchuria ." There are enterprises for the repair and maintenance of railway transport. Milk is being processed, bread and bakery products are being produced.

The leading direction in the development of agriculture was pasture fine-fleeced sheep breeding. Agricultural production is carried out by: pedigree PSK "Red Giant" (village of Red Giant), PSK "Abagaytuisky" (village of Abagaytuy), "Friendship" (urban village Zabaykalsk ), etc.

Transport

The area is crossed by the Trans-Baikal Railway ( Kharanor , Dauriya , Bilyutui stations, 6639-km stop, Matsievskaya , Zabaikalsk ). The Karymskaya - Zabaykalsk railway line connects Russia with China . The public road network provides intra-district traffic. Of federal importance is the A166 Chita - Zabaykalsk motorway, connecting Russia with China .

Education

In 2000, there were 9 secondary and 2 elementary schools, 4 kindergartens, the Children's and Youth Art School, the House of Children's Creativity, 11 libraries and clubs in the district. The weekly newspaper Zabaikalets is published.
