In 1968, discussions about further strategies took on a sharp form. The group of opponents of Fidel Castro , staffed mainly by veterans of the communist movement (old members of the People’s Socialist Party) led by Anibal Escalante, criticized the head of state’s strategy on a number of issues, in particular, proposing to refuse to support partisan movements in the countries of the region and to cooperate more widely with the communist parties region and adjust economic policy, and, specifically, return to a system of material incentives. Proponents of such changes were qualified by the party leadership as “microfraction” and repressed - in total 35 party functionaries suffered, punished with imprisonment for a term of 2 to 15 years.
