The Imperial Vilnius Medical and Surgical Academy ( Vilnius Medical and Surgical Academy ) is a higher educational institution operating in Vilnius (now Vilnius ) in 1832 - 1842 .
It was established instead of the medical faculty of the University of Vilnius , closed in 1832 . The Academy trained specialists in medicine , veterinary medicine and pharmacy . The duration of training ranged from three to five years.
The academy had 15 professors and 10 adjuncts . Among the professors were well-known scientists and doctors of different specialties Andrzej Snyadecki , Adam Ferdinand Adamovich , Felix Rymkevich , Vaclav Pelikan ( 1832 - 1833 ), Edward Eichwald , Jozef Kozhenevsky , Ivan Leonov and others
The rectors (presidents) were: Nikolai Myanovsky (1832-1833), Tomash Kuchkovsky (1833-1840), Joseph Myanovsky (1840-1842).
In the first year of the Academy, there were 580 students, in 1833 - 642. About 700 people graduated from the Academy. It defended 20 doctoral dissertations in medicine.
The Academy owned clinics of obstetrics, surgery and therapy (each of them has 20 beds), a hospital for students and employees of the Academy, a veterinary clinic, anatomical, chemical, physical, zoological and other rooms, a botanical garden, a pharmacy, a library; in the library by 1842 there were about 20 thousand books.
After the abolition of the Vilna Medical and Surgical Academy, its material base was inherited mainly by the Imperial University of St. Vladimir in Kiev .
