The Church of the Holy Prophet of God Elijah is a church in Zapochain , on Ilyinskaya Street in Nizhny Novgorod . Consecrated in honor of the prophet Elijah as the ruler of thunder and lightning. [1] [2] Built in memory of the deliverance of Nizhny Novgorod from the invasion of the Tatars and Nogais in 1505 . [1] [2] According to legend, at this place was a tent of the Nogai Murza, who was killed by an accurate shot of the captured gunner Fedi Litvich. [2] For the first time encountering formidable weapons, the army of Mahmet-Emin fled in panic. [2]

The church gave the name of one of the historic streets of Nizhny Novgorod - Ilyinskaya . [2]
History
The first wooden church was built in 1506 . [1] In 1655, the priest Stefan rebuilt the church in stone. [3]
In 1874, according to the project of architect I.K. Kostryukov, the refectory was rebuilt. [1] At the same time, the temple from one-headed became five-domed. [one]
Divine services were discontinued in 1932 , in Soviet times there was a bakery in the church. [1] Divine services resumed in 1995 . [1] On July 27, 2004, the cross was consecrated and a cross was erected on the bell tower. [4] By 2014, four small domes were restored.
