History

In January 2006, 3rd League was created by transforming Germany's amateur leagues. The goal of reforming the regional leagues was to create a league in which the winners would be more competitive in the second Bundesliga . The creation of the league caused controversy, some federal leagues demanded the right to immediately enter the 3rd league, while other teams protested. In the end, the clubs reached a compromise, which announced the admission to the third league for the 2 best teams of regional leagues.

On September 8, 2006, the creation of the 3rd league was formalized at the emergency meeting of the German Football Federation. The 4 worst teams of the second Bundesliga got into the league, they simply called the new league: “3rd League”, as the German Football League refused the possibility of a third Bundesliga, therefore the German Football Union took responsibility for the competition. On April 10, 2008, the 3rd League had its own logo. In the 3rd league, clubs were ranked from 3rd to 10th in the southern and northern regional leagues and 4 clubs were added to them, taking last places in the second Bundesliga all - in the 2007-2008 season.

The first game of the 3rd German League was held on July 25, 2008, where Roth-Weiss ( Erfurt ) and Dynamo Dresden met, the game was broadcast live on German television, ending in favor of Dynamo 1-0, the author of the first goal became Khalil Savran.
