Pacarana

Pacarana ( Dinomyidae ) - a relict family of South American rodents, including one modern and many extinct species. This family included the largest extinct rodent known to science: reaching the size of the bison Josephoartigasia monesi [1] and the smaller Josephoartigasia magna [2] . These animals occupied the ecological niche of large herbivores in South America at a time when this continent was isolated from North America. The only surviving representative of the family (Pakarana) has a body length of 73-79 cm and a weight of 10-15 kg.
