History

Origin

The origin of the clan is uncertain. According to one legend, the clan was founded by Lorn ( born Lorn ), the son of Erk ( born Erc ), who ruled Argyle in 503 AD. However, there is no evidence that Lorn is the progenitor of the clan.

According to another version, the founders of the clan were one of the Celtic clans and got their name in the XIII century from one of the abbots, whose name was Laurence from Echtow ( English Laurence, Abbot of Achtow ). In support of this, the motto of the McLaren clan is cited, and the cliff, allegedly in question, located just in the Echtou region, near the village of Balkigidder.

There is also a legend according to which MacLaren were soldiers under the command of the Earl of Strathearn , who fought in 1138 at the Battle of Northallerton on the side of David I.

War of Independence

During the Scottish independence wars, the McLaren clan sided with Robert Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.

XV century

Clan McLaren was very warlike and constantly at odds with neighboring clans. In the 15th century, McLaren formed a powerful alliance with the Stuart clan. A spokeswoman for the McLaren clan married Stuart from Lorne. The eldest son from this marriage, Dougall, became the founder of the Apparte Stuart clan.

In 1463, John Stewart, Dougall's father, was assassinated by a member of the McDougall clan. But already in 1468, the McLaren and Stuart clans together inflict a crushing defeat on the McDougall clan in the battle of Stalk (near the Stalker Castle). In 1469, McLaren helped Dougall, who tried to forcefully return his father's land. Then more than 130 clan warriors fell in battle at the foot of Mount Bendoran.

In 1488, the McLaren fought under the command of James III at the Battle of Sochibern .

From time to time, McLaren participated in clashes with neighbors ( MacDonald and Buchanan clans) with or without cattle theft. By the end of the 15th century, many clan warriors emigrated to the continent to serve in the armies of France and Italy .

16th Century

During the Anglo-Scottish Wars ( Cambrian League Wars during the Italian Wars ), the McLaren and Jacob IV fought the British at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. In 1547 they supported Mary, Queen of Scotland , at the Battle of Pinky .

In 1558, hostility broke out between the McLaren and the McGregor clan when the McGregor attacked the McLaren lands, killing the owners and seizing the lands of 18 McLaren families. This incident was not investigated until 1604, when the MacGregor was again spotted in robbery, though in relation to the Kolkahun clan.

18th century

In the 18th century, the McLaren actively supported the Jacobites of the Stuart clan. They participated in the Battle of Sheriffmuir in 1715, the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745 and the Battle of Falkirk in 1746. After the defeat at Calloden , clan leader Donald McLaren was forced to hide until the 1757 amnesty.
