Clan History

There are several versions about the origin of the name of the clan. The most likely of them suggests that the name comes from the Gaelic bheathain - i.e. full of life. Perhaps the original clan was called Mac Bhita or Macbeth, a surname evoking memories from Scotland's early history. When Malcolm III removed Macbeth’s clan from the throne, his authorities constantly challenged the powerful noble families of Morea . The unrest in this rebellious region continued for several generations, until the reign of Malcolm IV , who finally managed to crush the power of the Mormaire Morea, and their family members had to seek refuge in other parts of the kingdom. According to legend, the ancestors of the MacBains settled among the descendants of Gillihattan Mohr, who are usually called the Hattan clan.

The earliest known mention of the name of the clan in its modern form appears in the old manuscript of Kinrara (mid- 14th century), in which the names of Bob Macmilmore and his son, Milmore Macbane are named. The McBains supported Robert Bruce in the struggle for Scottish independence, and they are credited with the murder of the Red Comin steward, whose master was stabbed to death by Bruce at the Greyfriars Church in Dumfries in 1306 .

Paul Macbin, the 12th leader, burdened with heavy debts, was forced to sell his land around 1685 . The current branch of the clan comes from its youngest son. The eldest branch was cut short by his daughter, Elizabeth Margaret McBain, who, in about 1790 , married Dougald Stewart, but died childless.

The loss of clan lands in Keenhail must have been a very sensitive blow to the condition and position of the clan, but the current leader successfully continued his father’s work to return some of the clan’s possessions and created the McBain Memorial Park on the shores of Upper Loch Ness .

The MacBaines supported the Jacobite uprising of 1715 , and after its suppression, many were taken to plantations in Virginia, Maryland and South Carolina. However, this did not deter Mora McBain, the grandson of the 12th leader, from participating in the new Jacobite uprising of 1745 , when he, under the rank of major, came under the banner of the “Young Challenger”. Under Kulloden, in 1746 , when government dragoons broke through the highlanders' flank, the major rushed at them and killed 13 or 14 opponents until he was mortally wounded. The Hanoverian officer took his men back to save a brave compatriot, but Macbane was already dead. Another McBain distinguished himself in that bloody battle when he killed Cameron from Lochil, who was wounded and could no longer flee. After Kulloden, the leader struggled to keep the remaining clan lands, but they were still sold in 1760 . Also known is McBain, who in 1881 commanded the Highlanders of Gordon in the Boer War in South Africa.
