Koreasat-5 or Mugunghwa-5 is a South Korean dual-purpose telecommunications satellite owned by Korea Telecom Corporation. It is designed to provide television channel relay services, as well as satellite communications to military and civilian operators in the Asia-Pacific region . The satellite was manufactured by Alcatel Alenia Space based on the Spacebus 4000C1 platform for $ 170 million.

The payload consists of 24 Ku-band transponders , 4 Ka-band transponders and 8 SHF-band transponders . Ku-band satellite powers are used for civilian purposes, Ka and SHF-band transponders for military needs.
The Koreasat-5 satellite was launched into orbit on August 22, 2006 using the Zenit-3SL launch vehicle from the floating platform of the Sea Launch cosmodrome from the Pacific Ocean .
