Biography
Born in a family of bank employees. In 1908, Bergman married Steen Lindberg, daughter of theatrical actor August Lindberg. He was buried in the Northern cemetery in Örebro .
Creativity
Early Period
In 1910, Bergman published his first significant work, The Testament of His Grace ( Swedish: Hans nåds testamente ). In this story, it is easy and witty depicting the conflict of generations - the elderly owners of the family estate in Bergschlagen and their young heirs.
Average Period
The central works of the middle period were the novels “Marcurella from Wadkoping” ( 1919 ), “Mr. von Hanken” ( 1920 ) and “Grandmother and Lord God” ( 1921 ). These works are permeated with the idea of conscious humility against the backdrop of life's turmoil. In one of the letters of 1922, the writer united them, calling them “goodbyes”: in the first case, “with love and family life,” in the second, “with ambition and all kinds of utopias,” and in the third, “with the bourgeois milieu,” of which he went out .
Late Period
In the late period of creativity, especially after working in Hollywood, the writer suffered from deep depression and alcoholism. . Bergman's last serious work is considered [by whom? ] novel "Clown Yak", showing the decomposition of a creative person who has achieved wide popularity. The novel “Clown Yak” was written on the basis of impressions gained while working in Hollywood .
Bergman and Cinema
Bergman showed great interest in filmmaking and wrote a series of movie scripts in collaboration with Victor Schöstrom . In particular, director Gustav Mulander filmed the Swedenhelms novel with Ingrid Bergman in one of the roles. After a four-month trip to Hollywood on a contract ( 1923 - 1924 ), the writer increasingly complains of fatigue, is seriously and often sick. The latest work was the novel “Clown Yak” ( 1930 ) - introspection and merciless self-disclosure of the artist’s personality at the time of the break. The prototype for the protagonist of the novel was actor Josta Ekman (senior) . In 1931, Victor Schöstrom made an adaptation of Bergman’s novel Marcurella from Wadköping.
