Since 1841, Luther studied philosophy , mathematics and astronomy in Breslau and Berlin . In 1848 he got a job at the Berlin Observatory , and from 1851 he was appointed director of the observatory in Düsseldorf .
In the period from 1852 to 1873, Robert Luther discovered 24 asteroids, including (90) Antiope , known today as a double asteroid, and very slowly rotating (288) Hlavka .
The asteroid (1303) of Luther [2] and the crater on the far side of the moon are named after the astronomer.
