On May 1, 1919, the governments of the RSFSR and the Ukrainian SSR sent a note to the Romanian government, ultimately demanding the withdrawal of Romanian troops from Bessarabia. The Romanians did not answer, and then on May 5, 1919, the Provisional Worker and Peasant Government of Bessarabia was created on the territory of Ukraine (the chairman was I.N. Krivorukov ), and the advanced parts of the Red Army moved to the western bank of the Dniester and occupied a number of settlements. But the Romanian troops, contrary to preliminary estimates of the Soviet military leaders, were well trained. They successfully repelled the onslaught of the Red Army, and then threw them back, beyond the Dniester. With the beginning of the military intervention of Poland and France on August 2, 1919, the capital was moved to Tiraspol .
The republic ceased to exist in September 1919. The Polish occupation of the region continued until December 29, 1920 .
