The square was created in the late XVIII - early XIX century. Formerly called Bazarnaya, it was also known as the Bargaining, as there was a big bargain three times a week. Peasants brought livestock, agricultural products, and various handicrafts here. Rumyantsevskaya (now Sovetskaya ), Zamkovaya (now Lenin Avenue ) and Field Marshalskaya (now Proletarskaya ) streets diverged from it in 3 rays. The dominant feature of the composition was the palace of Prince Paskevich, who, together with the Peter and Paul Cathedral, determined the silhouette of the buildings in the city center.
