Coat of arms of Essen

There are several noble families of Essen, descending from the ancient Livonian nobles, and others of a later origin. The latter include the Russian noble family of Essenes (without the prefix von), the founder of which was the St. Petersburg military governor-general, member of the state council, infantry general Pyotr Kirillovich Essen (1772–1844), elevated in 1833 to the count dignity of the Russian Empire . In 1835, the Highest was ordered to Count Yakov Ivanovich Stenbock-Fermor , married to the only daughter of Peter Kirillovich, Alexandra, to take the name of his father-in-law and be called Essen-Stenbock-Fermor.

The most numerous is the von Essen family, whose ancestor was the Ostsee nobleman Thomas von Essen. This category includes such statesmen of many countries as Hans Heinrich von Essen (Hans Heinrich, Swedish Reichs and Field Marshal, Governor General of Norway, later Governor of Scania, elevated to the rank of dignity of the Kingdom of Sweden) , Otto Wilhelm (Otto Wilhelm; State Secretary E. I. V., Privy Councilor, Senator, Comrade Minister of Justice of the Russian Empire) , Nikolai Ottovich (Russian Admiral, Commander of the Baltic Fleet, participant in the Russo-Japanese War). Descendants of the genus now live in many countries of Europe and both Americas. There are descendants in Russia.

Coat of arms descriptions

The coat of arms of the Ostsee genus von Essenov is a shield where a silver owl sits on a branch in a azure background.

The count's coat of arms of Essen represents a shield, cut horizontally. From the chapter there is an emerging state eagle with three crowns in a golden field, bearing the monogram name of Emperor Nicholas I on its chest in the shield. In the lower half of the coat of arms there is a unicorn in a silver field running to the left, and a tree behind it.

The shield is crowned with the count's crown and under it are three helmets, with crests having: from the sides, three ostrich feathers, and in the middle - the emerging unicorn. Bait : to the right - red with gold, to the left - azure with silver. Shield-holders - warriors with spears, in cones. Motto: “By faith and fidelity.” The coat of arms of Count Essen is included in Part 11 of the General Tombstone of the noble families of the All-Russian Empire, p. 8.
