USS Cabot (CVL-28)

Cabot ( Eng. Cabot ), CVL-28 - a light aircraft carrier of the Independence type , which was in service with the US Navy . Was laid down as the light cruiser "Wilmington" ( English Wilmington ) type "Cleveland" in 1942 , reordered and completed as an aircraft carrier in 1942-1943. Actively used since January 1944 in battles in the Pacific during the Second World War , taking part in many important battles. In 1947 , like most U.S. aircraft carriers, it was withdrawn to the reserve. It was re-commissioned in 1948 , but already as a training aircraft carrier, since the size of the ship was already insufficient for operations with new jet aircraft, and since 1955 it was put back into reserve. In 1965 - 1967 the Cabot underwent repair and modernization, after which it was leased to the Spanish Navy under the name Dedalo ( Spanish Dedalo ) and number R 01 . In 1972, it was completely redeemed by Spain and remained in the arsenal of its fleet for another decade and a half. With the introduction of the new Principe de Asturias aircraft carrier in the Spanish fleet in 1989 , the Daedalus was decommissioned and handed over to the United States, which planned to turn it into a floating museum , but in the end these plans were not implemented and in 2000 the aircraft carrier was sold for scrapping.
