Biography
He was one of the first Armenian artists who, in his paintings, did not cover religious topics that have been fundamental in the Armenian fine arts for many years.
Hakob Hovnatanyan left behind a large number of portraits of his contemporaries. He was not only the founder of Armenian portraiture and one of the most prominent artists, but also one of the best European portrait painters.
Hakob Hovnatanyan was born in Tiflis , received his education from his father Mkrtum Hovnatanyan , who was a church artist. When he was 23 years old, he left for St. Petersburg (Russia) with the aim of entering the Imperial Academy of Arts . But he was not accepted because of his age.
Hakob Hovnatanyan was very popular in Tiflis as a portrait painter. But soon, due to the abundance of photos that appeared, he ceased to be popular. This forced him to move to Iran in the 1870s, where he died in 1881. His work was rediscovered after his death in 1920 . Among his masterpieces are works such as portraits of Natalie Teumyan, Gurbenkova, Karadyan, Astvatsatur Sargsyan and Catholicos Nerses Ashtaraketsi . Over 50 portraits of the artist are known [2] .
