Life and work

During his lifetime, Nagash wrote a biography of Astvatsatur [1] . Born into a family of a priest named Arakel. Educated in the monasteries of St. Ananias and St. Gevorg in his native Bitlis. Perhaps he also studied with Tovma Metsopetsi . In 1420, he moved to the city of Amid with his son Mesrop. In 1430, Catholicos Kostandin VI Vakhkatsi was ordained bishop, and in the next 1431 he was ordained bishop Amida and spiritual leader of the Armenians of Mesopotamia [1] . He had favorable political relations with local Muslim rulers, and therefore managed to gain some privileges for the Armenian population. He was engaged in the restoration and construction of churches. But soon, due to the repressions that started on the part of the new rulers and Muslim religious fanatics, he first moved to Constantinople , then to Feodosia [1] . After the change of the Muslim government in Amida, he returned back, where he restored the dilapidated Armenian church (the high dome of the Armenian church exceeding the minaret of the Muslim mosque became the cause of the conflict).

Mkrtich Nagash . "Vanity of the world":

O brothers, in the world all things are a dream and a deceit!
Where are the gentlemen, princes, kings, sultan and khan?
Build a fortress, a city, or a palace, or a bran camp -
All will be underground shelter forever given.

Be reasonable, Nagash, despise sins dope,
Do not believe that you will save good: it is fog;
Full of arrows, death for all carries a quiver,
Everyone will be underground shelter forever given.

Both the poetic and the artistic talent of Mkrtich Nagash appeared quite early. He wrote in the freedom-loving tradition of Frick . With his poetry, Nagash set Armenian lyricism to a new level, especially deepening its humanistic and secular content [1] . In such works as “The vanity of the world”, “On greed”, etc. Nagash reflects on the “vanity of the world”, condemns the rule of money, and opposes the decomposition of the morals of the clergy and those in power [2] . Songs about the Garibs (wanderers-exiles), about the tragic fate of the Armenian people in a foreign land. In poetry-reflections on the vanity of the world from a Christian perspective, he opposes social injustice, the corruption of morals. In 1469, he wrote "Crying" describing the tragedy of the epidemic in Mesopotamia in the same year. He wrote in the Middle Armenian literary language [1] .
