Guido's father, Lambert I, during the uprising of the sons of the emperor Louis the Pious, sided with his eldest son, Lothar I , because of which he lost possessions in Brittany and was expelled to Italy, where Lothar appointed him duke of Spoleto. Guido, unlike his older brother Lambert , who remained in Brittany, followed his father to Italy. As early as 829, he married Ite (Adelaide), the daughter of Duke Benevento Sikona .

In 842, Guido became the Duke and Margrave of Spoleto. In 843–846, he participated in the civil war raging in Benevento , supporting the brother of Duke Adalgis' wife. In 846, he expelled the Saracens from Latium , who had previously attacked Rome [1] .

In 858, Guido supported Prince Salerno Ademar against Count of Capua Lando I , demanding the Liri Valley for this.
