Origin
The McTavishes and Campbell may have common roots. Clan McTavish calls his ancestor Tavis Koyr, the illegitimate son of Colin Mel Mat and the daughter of Lord Suibne [1] . Nothing definite is known about Coira, but chroniclers often mention it [2] . In particular, the Campbell genealogy, compiled in the 17th century , states that Coir’s half-brother, Gillespick or Archibald, was the ancestor of Campbell, and the other brother, Iver, was Makeyvers [3] .
Alastair Campbell believes that the founder of the McTavish clan is not the semi-legendary Coir, but a historical figure, Sir Thomas Campbell [4] . The same opinion is shared by David Sellar [5] .
Sir Thomas Campbell is listed on the Kintyr landowners list for 1292 . His signature (“Thomas Campbell, Royal Citizen of Perthshire”) is present in the Ragman Scrolls of 1296 . In 1324 , most likely, after his death, his son Duncan received from the king of the earth in Argyle , and in 1355 was already known as Duncanus MacTameys [6] .
The Maktavishi lived for several centuries in the Danardry fortress, although it is not known exactly who built it and when. It definitely already existed in 1634 , in 1704 it was rebuilt [2] . Now there is nothing in its place, since the Krinansky Canal flooded it [6] .
