The surname Anderson, meaning "son of Andrew", is widespread in Scotland ( St. Andrew is the patron saint of the country), although it is also found in Europe, especially in Scandinavia . In Highland, the Makendrew form is better known, and this family is believed to be associated with the Anrias clan , a branch of the Ross clan , which in turn has been associated with the Hattan Federation of Clans since the beginning of the 15th century . The Kinrara manuscript states that McAndrew arrived in Badenoch from Moydart in about 1400 . The first mention of this family appears in 1296 , when David le Fitz-Andreou, a townsman from Peebles , and Duncan Fitz-Andreou from Dumfries were among those who took the vassal oath to Edward I.
One of the famous members of the family was John McAndrew from Dalnakhatnich - Ian Beg Macandrea - Little John McAndrew, who terrified his enemies. The family, however, was better known for the intellectual achievements of its members. Alexander Anderson from Aberdeen became known in Europe as a brilliant mathematician, when between 1612 and 1619 he published his works on geometry and algebra in Paris . His cousin David Anderson of Finschaw also had a mathematical mindset, and his most famous achievement helped to invent a method of eliminating a large rock that blocked the entrance to Aberdeen Harbor. Family talent was transferred to his grandson, James Gregory , the inventor of the new telescope. James Anderson (1739-1808) belonged to another generation. In his article about monsoons written for the first edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica , he predicted with remarkable accuracy the discoveries made later by Captain Cook on his expeditions.
The main Anderson families are Andersons from Dawhill, from West Ardbreck in Banfshire and from Kandakraig in Stratdon . In the 16th century, Anderson from Anderson was granted the coat of arms, but his family was not considered the main one, and therefore the main branch of the family is Andersons from Ardbreck.
Many families of different origin have the surname Anderson. The Andersons are also an English-language version of the name Ghillandreis (McGillandrace), which comes from the old Gaelic name of the servants of the Abbey of St. Andrews . The Ross clan is sometimes referred to as the Eindrea clan, and the surname Gillanders is often associated with Ross and is mentioned in early sources, according to which it comes from Mackintosh-t-Sagert Ferhar, hereditary abbot Applecross .
